Get Away - Big Krit
The first night in that "rental property" was so wild. Surreal, even. I can't even really explain it. The concept of sleeping in a bed had become so foreign to me, I almost couldn't get to sleep to start with, had I not been so comfortable and exhausted. I just can't believe that one random trip to Solar was what did it for me. I always heard of "angels" and "God putting certain people in your path on purpose", but this was something straight out of a movie. Like, a whole ass miracle. I couldn't believe it. One night, I'm sleeping on a New Crest park bench trying to get as comfortable as I could, and the next, I have a furnished apartment... With a bed.
Now, the first look of it, it wasn't much, like Ms. Erica had said. The furniture was a little bit worn; second hand, I'm guessing. There was a smell lingering in the place like a door or a window hadn't been cracked in years, but I guess that's normal seeing how she said no one's lived in here in a while. The kitchen needed some serious upgrading, but despite all of that... It was mine. I had went from nothing to a li'l bit, and from my point of view, a little bit was damn near a gold mine. I just stood in the middle of the living room just taking it all in, and boy, was that a lot.
"I hope you like it! Told you it wasn't much but," Ms. Erica started.
"No... I love it," I respond raspily. "I really do love it!" By now, I'm trying to hold back tears again.
"Now, do you need anything to get you started? Toiletries? Linens?"
"'I think I can deal for a little while. I just don't know what to say other than... Thank you."
"No problem, baby. I'm gonna let you get settled in. If you need anything, I'm nothing but a phone call and no more than about three miles away."
After she left, I took a second to familiarize myself with the place I'd now be calling home. The smell, the furniture. The grooves in the worn, but still sturdy wood floor. The low hum of electricity coming from the appliances. All things I associate with home. This place is mine, at least for the moment.
At about 2AM, insomnia got the best of me. I decided to wander around the house. I sat in my living room in complete silence for about twenty minutes, paying close attention to that electrical hum and the clicking of the ice maker in the freezer. Mine. All of it. The only thing plaguing me right now is how I'll be able to return this favor... And actually grab something on my own... By myself.
